Denver Street Art Explosion From The Likes Of Obey At DNC

Recently at the Denver National Convention in Denver not only were the Democrats hitting the streets and campaigning, street artists from all over the USA hit the streets with their own campaign. Famous street artists like Obey clothingowner Shepard Fairey have been wheat pasting posters and spray painting walls with iconic images. Most of the street art is related to the upcoming US presidential election either encouraging people to vote or to vote for Democrat candidate Barack Obama.

Obey Clothing kingpin Shepard Fairey was arrested by Denver police for fly posting his Obama Hope and Progress posters onto public property. This artwork has become a common sight across the globe as the artwork has been stenciled and fly posted on walls. Obey clothinghave even produced the Obama Hope artwork as a t-shirt. There is a video circling the Internet featuring Shepard describing the arrest and the Denver Police Officer’s “Redneck attitude”.

Something For The Ladies

Brooklyn based streetwear label SWNDL are making a name for themselves creating streetwear t-shirts primarily for women. The designs are great as you can see from these pictures and its good to see women making a mark in the streetwear market which is typically dominated by mens clothing. I just hope that they start producing some tees for guys soon otherwise I’m going to be wearing some tight tee shirts!

The Man, The Myth: Paul Frank

Paul Frank industries have established themselves as the top manufacturer of colourful accessories and characters. Paul Frank started in the 1990’s when he was an art student living in California. He would design and make wallets from vinyl off cuts from his art course that featured little characters that he created. He started to give away the wallets as presents to his close friends who loved the original characters. When he heard his friend’s praises he started building the Paul Frank Industries brand. 10 years later Paul Frank had firmly established himself as a leading clothing manufacturer with world wide distribution as well as stores in some of the biggest cities in the world. There are now a whole range of characters which includes the likes of Clancy the Giraffe, Worry Bear and Mika the Cat. The Paul Frank range has now spread to include Paul Frank pyjamas, clocks, underwear and their range of t-shirts and trousers.

Streetwear is a phrase used to describe clothing that is typically worn by the fashion conscious living in urban areas. Streetwear emerged out of the skate and surf scenes in California and has since spread across the globe. Nowadays many types of streetwear companies have spread across the globe. The likes of Paul Frank, Addict, Fly53 and WESC all started in different regions of the globe and are now available everywhere.

A large number of streetwear companies have now diversified to produce a whole range of products. WESC are now one of the top suppliers of audio products due to their range of WESC headphones. Designers like Fly53, MbyM and Supremebeing have mainly focused on adding those finer details to their clothes. Other streetwear brands like Paul Frank have chosen to produce unique accessories using their characters with a range of products and toys.
